Non-hazardous reclaimed railway sleepers

Our Purified Reclaimed European Softwood Railway Sleepers are genuine ex-railway sleepers in mixed European softwood, taken up from beneath the railway tracks of various European countries. Like our standard Reclaimed European Railway Sleepers, they were originally creosote treated, so they keep the long life that comes with that treatment. Before they reach us, they go through one extra stage.

They are purified at a hazardous waste recovery facility under recovery process R3, carried out under official permission DOS-III.7222.21.2021.HM of 10 November 2022. The process minimises benzo(a)pyrene, aromatic hydrocarbons, phenol and naphthalene to an acceptable content, so the timber is considered no longer hazardous and can be used as a fencing and garden product. How do these compare with our standard reclaimed sleepers?

Our Reclaimed European Railway Sleepers are sold as they came out of the track: creosote treated, aged and rustic. These purified sleepers share the same European softwood origin, the same 250 x 150 mm section and the same chunky, characterful look. The difference is that they have been purified and declared non-hazardous, which makes them a good fit for fencing and garden projects.

Sizes, bundles and weight

Choose 2600 mm full lengths (approx. 68 kg each) or 1300 mm half lengths (approx. 34 kg each). Both are sold singly or in bundles of 24 at a 10% saving. At around 700 kg/m³, these are dense, heavy sleepers, so please plan handling and access accordingly.

These sleepers were in use for many decades, so they can contain fragments of metal and may have spray paint markings on the surface. As with all reclaimed sleepers, lengths and section sizes can vary slightly.

As with any reclaimed timber, some customers prefer to wear gloves when handling.
